This will be you as everyone has to learn the DSMB!

Diving with Laura and what to expect before, during and after the dive

What to expect:

When you dive with Laura, you’ll get to see all the best sites Cozumel has to offer, with personalized attention. For each dive, I’ll brief you on the specifics of the site we’re about to do (see below), and I’ll cover the following general points:

  • Dive Depth: I’ll outline how deep we’re going, and for how long.

  • Boat: I’ll cover the necessary points about the boat - you’ll need to remember the name of the boat and which radio channel it uses.

  • Water Entry: Each boat is different, some we’ll backroll off the side, some we’ll giant stride off the back. If you haven’t done one of either before, I’ll cover what you should do.

  • Buddies: you’ll either be paired with someone from your group, or I’ll be your partner. We’ll go over the buddy check, and where I’d like you both to be in terms of positions on the dive.

  • Signals: Please see the Signals page for all the signs related to diving, including signs for various sea creatures.

  • Buddy Separation: I’ve never had it happen, but you should know what to do if you get separated. Details are in FAQ 16.

  • Ending the dive: when you or your buddy reaches 1000 psi/50 bar, let me know, and we’ll start shallowing up. When you reach 700 psi, we’ll start our safety stop, hanging out at 5m/15ft for 3 mins, or whatever our computers tell us. I’ll deploy my DSMB, and we’ll head to the surface.

  • Back on the boat: the boats seem psychic in their ability to follow divers from above. Since all dives in Cozumel are drift dives, we don’t go out and back, we drop in, coast on the current, and come up somewhere else. The boats are looking for your DSMB (you’ll learn how to use one). You’ll then grab the boat rope, take your fins off and head up the ladder.

  • Surface Interval: Once back on board, change your tank over, and relax with some snacks until it’s time to do the next one!

Could be you and me!
