Scuba Bootcamp

Give me a week, and I’ll get you ready for any type of dive the world can throw at you. We’ll first perfect your buoyancy and trim, and play with breathing patterns to maximize your air consumption. As the week progresses, we do more and more advanced dives. We go deep - 30m or what your level states. We dive the C-53 wreck and penetrate, swimming through all the ship’s levels. Along the way, you’ll have spontaneous problems to solve.  Can’t tell you more than that, it’s got to be a surprise :D. If you don’t have nitrox, we’ll do that for you as we go, as that is a requirement for the last day of the dive. After you’ve built your confidence, we’ll put it to the test by completing two dives on Cozumel’s advanced reefs, either south to Punta Sur and Devil’s Throat, or north to the eagle ray spots.

After this, you’ll be ready for anything.

The Cozumel Experience

Do you want to experience everything Cozumel has to offer?  The Cozumel Experience will give you a week of spectacular diving, in all kinds of environments.  We’ll start with a shore dive to make sure you’re comfortable in your equipment, and are weighted correctly.  Then, we head out for five days of boat diving!  We’ll go south to Palancar, and the incredible formations.  We’ll go to Yucab and see the ridiculous Splendid Toadfish.  If you like, we’ll dive the wreck of the C-53, and see all the creatures that come out in the dark on a night dive.  Along the way, we’ll work to improve your trim, buoyancy and air consumption, plus you’ll learn how to use a DSMB.

Come experience what Cozumel has to offer.

Scuba Bootcamp - What’s Included

  • Most flights arrive around noon, so once you’re checked in to your accommodation, we’re going for a shore dive.  This is the time to test out all your equipment, especially if you’re renting some gear.  We’ll also make sure you’re weighted correctly, for your equipment and wetsuit.  We also get to go diving, woo!

  • First thing in the morning, we’re off to do a two-tank dive on Cozumel’s spectacular reefs.  This won’t be anything too strenuous, as I want you to experience the reefs as well as learn!  This is a great opportunity to see how your trim and weighting are working at depth, and afterwards, we’ll work together to identify the areas you want to work on.  There might even be turtles!

  • Now we know how you dive, it’s time to start working on the advanced stuff.  We’ll go to 30m on the first dive, and go over how to plan for such a dive, if you were doing it independently.  The second dive will be shallower, but will have more current, your first proper taste of the drift.  This dive will also show you how navigating no-decompression time limits work.

After these two dives, it’s off to the shore site as we’re practicing how to deploy a DSMB!  This is a critical skill in drift diving, and you need to be able to deploy it quickly.

  • If the trip you’re preparing for is a liveaboard, well, you’d better know what it’s like to do four dives in one day.  Two dives in the morning, where we’ll practice real-world problem solving and fish id.  We’ll rest for a bit, then it’s back to the marina for a twilight wreck dive, and a night dive.  It’s tiring, but you can do it!

  • By this point, you’ll have experienced drift, deep, and completed nitrox training, if you haven’t already.  It’s time to put these new skills to the test,  as we’re heading out to the advanced reefs of Cozumel.  These reefs aren’t advertised much, as they have conditions not fit for the average open water diver.  That’s not you though.  We’ll go to either the very south of the island, to Devil’s Throat and the Cathedral, or we’ll go north to Eagle Ray Wall.  These dives are not only deep, and require nitrox, but they can also have very strong currents.  They might require negative entry, depending on the condition.  But what better way to prove to yourself what you can do?

  • By this point, you’ve surely earned a rest, but if you just can’t be stopped, this is the day to add on an extra dive. Want to see the Bull Sharks over in Playa del Carmen? Want to dive Cenotes? Just want to go diving one more day? I’ll make it happen. You’ve earned the choice.

  • Now we know how you dive, it’s time for you to choose what kind of diving you’d like to do, or if there’s anything that you’d like to work on. This is a good time to push your limits just a little, so if you don’t have anything specific in mind, let’s do a deeper dive, to practice planning and managing your no-decompression time. The second dive will likely be a drift dive, and where I’ll teach you how to deploy a DSMB, a crucial skill to learn.

  • To make sure you’re getting the most variety of diving, this day you’ll get the choice between diving from the boat in the morning, or the boat in the late afternoon. Morning dives are as usual, but the twilight dive is a great alternative. We dive the wreck of the C-53 first, getting to go inside and explore. After some dinner and a relax, we jump in for a night dive right as the sun goes down. We’ll get to see all the weird and wonderful things that like to come out at night.

If you’re really keen, we can do both!

  • By this point, you’ll have experienced drift, deep, and completed nitrox training, if you haven’t already. So now is your choice of what you want to do on your fifth day - do you want to do a regular boat dive, or do you want to see a part of Cozumel most don’t get to see? If you choose, we will be heading out to the advanced reefs of Cozumel.  These reefs aren’t advertised much, as they have conditions not fit for the average open water diver. We’ll go to either the very south of the island, to Devil’s Throat and the Cathedral, or we’ll go north to Eagle Ray Wall.  These dives are not only deep, and require nitrox, but they can also have very strong currents.

If this sounds a bit too intense, no worries, the idea here is to have fun. We’ll have a great day on the boat as usual.
